Great poem, I particularly like one passage because it reminds me of two great films, “Malcolm X” and “Spartacus.” In Spartacus, the slaves shout, “I am Spartacus” to confuse the Romans seeking to kill the leader of the revolt. In Malcolm X, children shout, “I am Malcom X!” identifying his struggle as their own.

“I am the homeless brother and sister up the street
I am the youth for whom crime & gangs are the only way to make ends meet!
I am the teen and preteen prostitute herded from county to county!
I am the disaster that is your community everyday, disaster RELIEF ME!”

It would be great if there were a major encuentro between Latinos and Muslims on the Left. There’s a lot to talk about, and left-wing Latinos and Muslims can come to common positions in public, from domestic issues of racial and religious discrimination to migration issues to international issues. Maybe you can play a role in making one happen, since your Spanish is good (or it seems so from your Web site). From there, Latinos and Muslims can expand and further reach out to other social forces who might agree on a common program of struggle. Salam,

When I read Imam Khomeinie’s (Ra) “Islamic Government” I felt a strong ’socialist’ tone in it. May be perhaps Islam does have socialism in it. I have never heard the term ‘Imperialist/imperialism” by non Iranian scholars (maybe I am wrong).
