PSUV, the party affiliated with La Revolución Bolivariana of Venezuela won 77-80% of state and local elections yesterday. However, they did lose in important cities such as Caracas (the capital of Venezuela) – those losses, while significant, should not overshadow the profound (real) change that Venezuela has gone through over the past decade.
There is much that still remains to be done, especially with respect to increasing involvement at local levels, and delivering concrete results – as Chavez himself said, such as getting the trash picked up on time… But even more so, recognizing the structural faults that lie in attempting a social revolution while using the tools of liberal democracy. Chavez has pointed out how the poorest of people are prevented from voting, and the incessant propaganda that the opposition dishes out with the aid of the imperialists’ propaganda media.
