waking up

When the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings upon him and his Family) woke up from his sleep, he would praise Allah (narrated in Bihar al-Anwar, 15:292, trans. in Sunan An-Nabi p. 81, #14)

momin

“So he who enjoins good, lends strength to the momin, and he who forbids evil earns the scorn of the kafirun; and he who is truthful in all situations (fearlessly) judges against himself, and he who abhors the impious displays anger for the sake of Allah; and he who displays anger for His sake is a true momin. This is then the definition of Faith.” (Imam Ali, attributed in Al-Amali, ch. 33, #3)

taghut

Those with iman (amanoo) fight in the way of Allah, and the kafaroo fight in the way of the taghut (Qur’an 4:76)

And who are the taghut?

The patrons (awliya) of the kafaroo are the taghut. They bring them out of the light into a deep darkness (Qur’an 2:257)

“Taghut is an emphatic form of tughyan (“outburst” “inundation” “rebellion”) – tagha’lma means that water, having reached a flood stage and overflowed its bed, is ruining nearby houses, trees, and fields; this is the meaning of a tughyan of water. Taghut characterizes the individual who engages in tughyanm, who is headstrong… The taghut departs from all social bounds and obligations and tramples them underfoot. It is as if the storms of the taghut’s sensual and passional drives have raged so far beyond possible control that he oversteps all bonds.” (Ayatullah Sayyid Mahmud Taleghani, Society and Economics in Islam, p. 80)

Capitalist imperialism is, then, also a form of taghut – it cannot contain itself – it overflows, and by its very definition, must expand. And while expanding and going beyond all bounds, it ends up ruining whatever comes in its way – ultimately leading to a deep darkness – not just metaphorically, but also in concrete human terms. Taghut does not merely destroy infrastructure, or what we witness outwardly, but for those who choose to fight in the way of taghut it makes them into oppressors, and destroys their inner life, who may end up believing that there are no limits to their expansion.

certitude

They are the ones overwhelmed by the (true) knowledge of certitude, and have made it easy for themselves to tread on the path which men in luxury found difficult. They derive pleasure and enjoyment from things which repel the ignorant. Though they live on earth with their bodies, their souls hang onto the higher plane. They are the (true) representatives of Allah on His earth, and the ones who invite (people) to His religion. (Imam Ali (AS) attributed in Al Amali, ch. 29, #3)

worldly gain

“some unscrupulous men of understanding have tried to misuse it, using religion as a weapon to earn the worldly gain, and seeking undue power by divine authority over Allah’s creatures, abusing His bounties which He bestowed upon them.” (Imam Ali (AS) attributed in Al Amali, ch. 29, #3)

wealth

O Kumail, dividend from wealth disappears with its loss, O Kumail, the hoarders of wealth have died, while the learned exist for ever; their bodies have disappeared but their teachings and wisdom are ingrained in the hearts.” (Imam Ali (AS) attributed in Al Amali, ch. 29, #3)

the ulema

On the Day of Reckoning Allah will cast the most disapproving look at those “ulema” (scholars) whose knowledge has not benefited the people, or, who have acquired knowledge simply to gain worldly honour without benefiting anyone else. Such “ulema” will never smell the scent of Paradise. (Rasul Allah, peace and blessings upon him and his Family, narrated in Abu Dharr)
