the protected hearts
… the gloomy seditious affairs, the heresies, the consecutive authorities of the oppressors, the misfortunes, the fear of rulers, and incitement of shaytan – they all shake the pure intentions of the heart and stop the right (haq) guidance and recognition of the rightful, except the hearts of those whom Allah the Majestic protects. (Imam Sajjad (AS) attributed in Tuhaf al-Uqoul, trans. pg. 296)

the world
The world and its disappointments never made the Prophet of Islam, peace and blessings upon him and his Family, angry. But when someone’s rights were usurped, he would become so angry that nobody would recognise him and nothing would stand in his way until he had helped him (regain the usurped rights). ( Sunan An-Nabi, by Allama Tabatabai, ch. 1, #17, narration attributed to Imam Husayn (AS))

And they whose weight is light in the balance – it is they who will have squandered their own selves, [destined] to abide in hell:
The fire will scorch their faces, and they will abide therein with their lips distorted in pain.
Waman khaffat mawazeenuhu faolaika allatheena khasiroo anfusahum fee jahannama khalidoona
Talfahu wujoohahumu alnnaru wahum feeha kalihoona (Qur’an 23:103-104)
Allama Tabatabai says in his tafseer, Al-Mizan: Man shall be burned in a fire that will be kindled and fueled by his own self (nafs, or “ego” as this is often translated in English)
